The name Arago was chosen from several suggestions. We were looking for a name that was suggestive of both Davinci and OMAP but not so obviously that it would be a problem if the scope expanded. It was suggested that the Paris meridian was mentioned in the "Da Vinci Code" book and movie and was related to "map"s. The Arago medallions mark this meridian in honor of François Arago, a very forward and "open" thinker.
